First American Lutheran Church - Hardin

First American Lutheran Church in Hardin, Montana, was officially established in January 1919. But its history actually began some twelve years before that, with the arrival of the first Norwegian Lutheran settlers in 1907. These first families gathered for worship regularly but it was not until November 1914 that the first worship service was held by an ordained minister. The congregation did not have a church building of their own until 1951. Until then they used various buildings, including Carpenter's Hall on Center Avenue. Finally, on June 3, 1951, the First American Lutheran Church congregation held their first worship service in their new building on the corner of West 4th Street and North Terry. Currently the congregation is made up of people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

The church building was renovated in 1996 and expanded to include an educational wing and a new kitchen. The educational wing is used for Sunday School classes from preschool and for confirmation classes during the week. The kitchen and Fellowship Hall are used every Sunday following worship for a time of fellowship before Sunday School starts and for potlucks and special meals that are a regular part of congregational activities. The congregation sponsors a number of fund-raising events during the year, for example the church ladies make and sell cabbage rolls and blarney stones. First American Lutheran Church is active in a variety of other community organizations.

Sunday morning worship is held at 10:00am, with the adult choir meeting at 9:00am. Sunday School for preschool through adult is held from 11:15am - 12:15pm. A nursery and family area are available during worship. For more information, contact Pastor Catherine Card, 406-666-2516.
