International Migratory Bird Day - Moiese

Saturday, May 12, 2012

International Migratory Bird Day is a yearly event conducted to make people aware of birds. This year's theme, which helps celebrate IMBD's 20th anniversary on May 12, 2012 is "Connecting People to Bird Conservation" and will focus on 20 ways people may help preserve birds every day. The public can become involved in a variety of events held at the National Bison Range (registration required). As part of the celebration, the 19-mile Red Sleep Mountain Drive is opened for the summer season (weather and road conditions permitting).

For those interested in learning how to bird watch and identify birds, sign up for the Beginning Bird Walk. No experience is necessary, although binoculars are handy to have with you. Staff will take you on a leisurely stroll and help identify the birds seen. Staff will offer pointers on what to look for, where to go, and how to continue bird watching. Commonly seen birds are tree swallows, yellow warblers, Bullock' oriole and American robins.

There are also excellent bird watching opportunities along Red Sleep Mountain Drive. Because this route travels through a variety of habitats, a wide range of birds can be seen, including lazuli buntings, red-breasted nuthatches and even golden eagles.

Shorter activities occur throughout the day, including tips on backyard bird feeding, gardening for wildlife and birds and bluebird nest boxes. Trivia quizzes, displays, free posters and free coloring pages are available for those who visit.
