Tamarack Time! - Bigfork

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Tamarack Time! is an old fashioned celebration of the harvest! Since the tamarack, or western larch, attains its greatest size and abundance in western Montana, it is particularly appropriate that the time of spectacular color change be the occasion for the Flathead's autumn celebration. In 1933 the outstanding resource values of the western larch were acknowledged with the designation of the Coram Experimental Forest, an International Biosphere Reserve, at the junction of the three forks of the Flathead River as a center of Forest Service research into the ecology and silviculture of the tamarack. When the smoky golden torches of the tamarack crowns flame into prominence on the mountainsides to announce their presence, when the forest paths are carpeted with soft golden needles, then it is Tamarack Time! Join Tamarack Time! for dues of $4 to sample the area's outstanding recipes as prepared by local community members. This small non-commercial festival is bite-sized and just for fun. From soup to chocolate, it's the best.
