Montana Historical Society - Helena

The Montana Historical Society houses the 'Montana Homeland' exhibit that traces 12,000 years of history under the Big Sky. Its Mackay Gallery has one of the premier Charles M. Russell art collections. Special exhibits are rotated regularly.



The Society library, archives, and photo archives are a draw for historians and genealogists. The MHS archives contains manuscript collections containing such topics as business and finance, mining, homesteading and ranching, the pioneer era, and social organizations. The archives also has oral history recordings.



The Society publishes 'Montana The Magazine of Western History' and history books. The museum store is a treasure house of Western books and gifts. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $1.00 for children and $12.00 per family. May 1 - September 30: Monday - Saturday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, Thursday until 8:00pm, closed Sunday. October 1 - April 30, Monday - Saturday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, Thursday until 8:00pm, closed Sunday and holidays.
